Autopoiesis
Public Group active 10 months ago“ISSS2010 Ron Cottam says that there’s no such thing as self-organization, it’s all about a thing and its environment. If a group self-organizes, it’s a person in his or her environment”
Humberto Maturana makes a very convincing arguement for self production. Eric J. Lindblom PhD

Autopoiesis: 1 year, 3 months agoLike to invite you to look at my take on autopoiesis which differs from that of Maturana and Varella in that it is symbiotic instead of unified. See Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory or Autopoietic Reflexive Systems Theory at http://works.bepress.com/kent_palmer. I don’t think Autopoiesis is a finished theory, I believe it…[Read more]

Autopoiesis: 1 year, 9 months agoNiklas Luhmann writes extensively about autopoiesis in his work. I am currently reading the English translation of “Social Systems” originally published in German in 1984. His view on self organizing social systems foreshadows what we see happening today through social networking.
It is difficult to imagine a purely “self organizing” social…[Read more]

You’re into some deep stuff, Chuck – but potentially very useful. I struggled through Social Systems in order to incorporate it into my doctoral dissertation, and it literally added months to getting it done. The best reference I knew for Luhmann was Soren Brier in Denmark, who was the original (I think) editor of Cybernetics and Human Knowing…[Read more]

I read one commentary that said Luhmann intentionally made his ideas difficult to access because he did not want superficial understanding of his ideas that could be trivialized. If that is true, then he did a good job! (But made his thinking largely inaccessible!)
The book is nearly 500 pages, plus another 130 pages of notes. I have read one…[Read more]

Autopoiesis: 1 year, 9 months agoIt isn’t that often one comes upon a word like Autopoiesis twice in the same day, yet today was that day for me. The other mention was in a post entitled “Where are we heading with SCRM”, written by Esteban Kolsky (@ekolsky) for Effective CRM. Here’s the link – http://bit.ly/a8NHkP.
The beginning of the article contains the tweet in which the…[Read more]

I am particularly interested in the association between Autopoiesis and ouroboros! Could you illustrate that point more?
-
Eric – I don’t think I can offer more than Wikipedia has to say about it. As I stated, I think I have completely misunderstood what Ouroboros stood for. I never thought of it as self-reflexivity, etc. I always saw it as symbolic of someone or thing getting in its own way or eating itself up by doing the wrong things. I based my understanding on…[Read more]

Autopoiesis: 1 year, 9 months agoIt depends, I think, if love is considered a whole system.

Autopoiesis: 1 year, 9 months ago”if other emotions can create intelligence, why then are we singling out LOVE?” henry kwok
I believe love is singled because it is the BASIS for all intelligence according to Maturana. (”Love is the grounding of our existence as humans and is the basic emotioning in our systemic identity as human beings.” — Humberto R. Maturana”
