@dbarber Thanks for the maintenance. I’ll make sure that the system is stable, and then may introduce a few new features.

Community Administrators: 1 year, 8 months agoI’ve created an events calendar for the ”Systems Movement” on Google, and have it visible on SysCoI and the ISSS site. If anyone would like the privilege of updating the calendar, let me know.

Community Administrators: 1 year, 10 months agoI’ve upgraded to the latest wordpress release. I’ve also upgraded all plugins that were out of date. The “Auto Group Join” plugin caused problems, so it has been deactivated. We can watch for updates and re-install later. Let me know if you have issues. There is one outstanding issue with the page list at the top of the site. I need to…[Read more]

@dbarber Thanks. That ”Auto Group Join” plugin wasn’t working before … so nothing has changed.

Kent Myers posted an update in the group
Community Administrators: 1 year, 10 months agoWhen I click a link in a message, I remain in the same tab and switch pages. A lot of other sites open a new tab/window instead, which leaves the original (syscoi) tab available. Is that something you can control in syscoi software, and wouldn’t it be better to open new tabs?
-
Kent – I’m not sure about the options in this platform, but as a default if you ”right click” the link before opening it, you’ll get the option to open the link in either a new tab or a new window (amongst other things.) I’ll leave bigger changes to the platform itself to David Ing.
-
@myersk The standard user interface procedure is to switch to the new page. Opening a new tab or window is special coding (in Javascript) that (i) sometimes triggers popup blockers in browsers, and (ii) doesn’t necessarily play well on non-PC-based devices (e.g. an iPod). The behaviour could be be coded with some effort, but the side effects…[Read more]

David Ing posted on the forum topic Collaborative documents (wikis) for syscoi in the group
Community Administrators: 1 year, 10 months ago@myersk I’ve updated pages and the navigation at http://artifacts.syscoi.com (which is the address for readers). Editors should come in on the address https://sites.google.com/site/systemscoi/ . There were pages preformatted that were hidden. I’ve now exposed the “Chronology of ACDT actions). I had removed the file attachments consciously, and we…[Read more]

Kent Myers posted on the forum topic Collaborative documents (wikis) for syscoi in the group
Community Administrators: 1 year, 10 months ago@daviding: What should be expect concerning wiki pages? I have a need for one: A chronology of ACDT public actions. This would be a table with four columns – event, date, persons responsible, link to documentation. I wanted to list six events: ACDT concept announced, ACDT design concept distributed, DC meeting, proposal submitted to Grand Challenges, [...]

Community Administrators: 1 year, 10 months agoThe Digest email that I just received from syscoi repeats the abstracts three times. That’s an error you might look into. Makes us look very active — but also very repetitive!

David Ing posted on the forum topic (Soft) launch of the SysCOI web site in the group
Community Administrators: 1 year, 11 months agoSince @dbarber has managed a successful upgrade to Wordpress 3.0 RC3 (working around a minor bug), I’ve been tweaking the final plugins. We now have the Buddypress Group Email Subscription plugin working, so people can receive daily digests of activity. In addition, I’ve now configured a Welcome Pack plugin that will point point to the Hints…[Read more]

@dbarber Thanks for the technical support. The Buddypress Email Subscription plugin now works, so that under the Groups tab, there’s an Email Options popup that each person can set up for himself/herself.
This comes at the expense of using the Group Activity Subscription plugin … and I haven’t figured out what we’re giving up, as a result.

David Ing posted on the forum topic Test Forum Topic in the group
Community Administrators: 1 year, 11 months agoActually, it is a good idea to have a “tester” forum thread. People sometimes want to try out the technology, but are unsure as to how it works.
In Buddypress, it’s also feasible to delete responses (or the whole thread) after confidence has been established with the individual!

Community Administrators: 1 year, 11 months ago@daviding Is there a way we can post to a forum and have the post sent to Twitter?
-
@dwilson All activity gets posted to Twitter at http://twitter.com/syscoi . That being said, there may be a delay in the transfer since we rely on Twitterfeed which is a free service (and I just noticed that it’s in maintenance at this very moment). For a higher level of service, I work for a company that that could guarantee more reliability…[Read more]

Community Administrators: 1 year, 11 months ago@dbarber I presume that Syscoi.com will move from testing to soft launch over the weekend. I’m encouraged that Wordpress 3 Release Candidate 3 will be available Friday, June 11 around 8 p.m. ET , that should enable us to install the Buddypress Group Email Subscription plugin . As an public space, there actually isn’t a requirement for visitors to…[Read more]

Community Administrators: 1 year, 11 months agoI just posted several statements. They went in as replies jammed into the middle of the “All” string of statements. That string, and its replies, is not associated with either a Group or Forum, and the string is not arranged by date, and it doesn’t pop up on “recent site-wide activity”. so it is really unretrievable, and nobody will every…[Read more]

@myersk You’ve demonstrated why threading in forums is a good thing. However, not everyone likes structure, so the activity stream (now famous as the Facebook wall) is the mess you describe.
A future feature that would be nice in Buddypress would be to add structure to comments after the fact, rather than before.
-
This is where I feel we may be able to utilize Twitter.
So lets say we nudged each designer to use a particular hashtag at the end of each idea posted. Lets say #AVICDesign.
Then we would have the ability to converge this information when necessary. There are many tools available that leverage the hashtag convention. …[Read more]

@dwilson All of the updates from syscoi.com get published at http://twitter.com/syscoi, so if the follower uses Twitter, it’s easy to follow. There may be a 15-minute delay from Twitterfeed, so e-mail notifications are actually faster.
The better alternative is Friendfeed, with a stream at http://friendfeed.com/syscoi. I prefer instant…[Read more]

Both are available. Yea? If so why not use both? I see no risks.

BTW, I do see your posts. Incidentally, a great way to get a broad feel for what has been posted is by using the ”Recent Site Wide Activity” link on the right side menu pain. Gives more of a linear view of the data.

David Ing started the forum topic Groups on Syscoi.com in the group
Community Administrators: 1 year, 11 months agoI’ve removed the Scholars group and the Careerists group. This is the result of learning, and the observation by @dwilson that the distinctions between the groups was somewhat confusing. I had originally set up the Buddypress Groups to learn about whether they would or wouldn’t make a difference. I can see that making a distinction between [...]

Community Administrators: 1 year, 11 months agoI had responded to to @myersk on his activity stream with some technical options … and @jp2consult has asked about this. There’s two separate steps to be done. (1) the video file has to be uploaded onto a web site; and (2) we’ll create a link on this web site, so that it will show up. There’s some [...]

Community Administrators: 1 year, 11 months agoMaybe there is no way to expand the edit box for posting, but I find it confining. It expects a short statement, but I and others of our ilk write longer statements, and the box feels confining. Just as people have pointed out that requiring everything to be on a Powerpoint encourages pat answers that fit the page or the 3-5 bullet point format,…[Read more]

I’ve increased the size of the text book from 10 lines to 15 lines in Wordpress, but I suspect that it’s overridden by Buddypress. I think that we’re going to have live with the restriction for now.
The unfortunate alternative is to use an desktop editor, and then copy-and-paste the content into the text book. On Windows, I’ve discovered…[Read more]
