1. Getting started

1a. What are the first steps towards participating in the discussion?
  • Subscribe via email:  The syscoi.com site uses subscribe.wordpress.com to manage notifications.
    • If you already have a WordPress.COM account, then syscoi.com will be added to followed sites in your WordPress Reader.
    • If have never used WordPress.COM before, you have an option to sign up and start a new blog or web site (for free).  This is not necessary to participate on syscoi.com .
  • To post and comment, obtain an invite code to join syscoi.com.
    • If you know someone already in the community, they may already have an invite code, or will put you in touch with someone to provide you with one.
    • If you don’t know anybody in the community, you can fill out an online Request for an invite code, and one will be provided.
  • Register to post and comment, using the invite code  A request for user access will be sent to the administrator for approval.  Confirmation will be sent by return e-mail.
  • Login, and the Front end Editor should become visible at the top of the screen.  It looks like this.

  • Complete your profile , including an image that identifies your persona.  If you have been active on the Internet, your e-mail address may already link you to a Gravatar (Globally Recognized Avatar).
1b. Instead of using a browser, can I participate via my smartphone or tablet?
A computer browser presumes a live connection to the Internet. Mobile offline features (e.g. using the smartphone camera) are available from apps.wordpress.com for Android and iOS devices.
  • Connect the app on Android by tapping the “Add self-hosted site” link, and using the URL of “http://syscoi.com/stream/”.
  • Connect the app on iOS by tapping the “Add self-hosted site” link, and using the URL of “http://syscoi.com/stream/”.

A mobile app can make writing posts easier, but only browser access enables seeing posts written by others, and commenting.

2. Reading and Sharing

At the bottom of each post is a row of “Share this” buttons, that look like this:
These buttons do not appear on the Stream main page, only on at the bottom of each post.

3. Writing

3a. Which interfaces are available for writing a post?
Two interfaces are available from the browser; a third is available via an app that can be installed on your device.
  • On the browser, the syscoi.com Stream (Home) page has a Front end Editor at the top of the page.  This is a convenient, quick way to edit a few sentences, and preview the resulting formatting.
  • Also on the browser, the top menu has a link to the Full Post Editor.  This invokes the full WordPress administration interface that is familiar to bloggers.
  • On mobile devices, the app lists posts — both published, and pre-published — synchronizes with the author’s identity on the WordPress server.  It’s possible to (i) publish directly from the device app, or (ii) start editing on the device, synchronize the drafts, and then publish from the server.
3b. Does a post need a title?
A title is not necessary, but may be desirable.  The permalink (i.e. address that makes up part of the URL) is constructed based on the title.
  • The Front end Editor doesn’t require a title, and will automatically construct a permalink based on the first few words in the post body.
  • The Full Post Editor will construct a permalink (under the title field), and allows the author to modify it.
3c. How is the text formatted in a post?
  • Plain text is acceptable.  Links (e.g. http://wordpress.com ) will automatically be made alive.  Button is the Front end Editor and Full Post Editor can be used to add Markdown syntax.
  • WordPress accepts Markdown as specified by John Gruber, for authors uninterested in coding HTML.
3d. How do I insert an image into a post?
  • Entering a URL for a recognized video, audio, image or document will result in a shortcode the embeds that content into a post.
  • In a browser, dragging-and-dropping an image file into the post edit window (both on the Front End Editor, and on the Full Post Editor) will automatically upload the image, enabling embedding amidst the text.
  • In an app, there’s a button to embed a video or audio file on the device amidst the text.

5. The platform

5a. What is the connection between the syscoi.com web site, and wordpress.com?
5b. Why are the Jetpack social sharing features not working for my account?
  • Jetpack has been developed primarily for wordpress.COM hosting, and works secondarily with wordpress.ORG self-hosted sites. Social sharing is a feature available only to a single syscoi.com account (i.e. the administrator), and not everyone registered on the web site. Unfortunately, the standard installation of WordPress doesn’t hide Jetpack from authors.
